Phil started his career by working as a Horticultural apprentice at Hampton Court Palace in 1974 – 1977 and then after working at Hampton Court Palace, Phil went to work for The National Trust in Claremont Landscape Gardens. This was excellent timing as he was involved with the restoration work for the gardens, which involved clearing trees, building garden structures and generally bringing the garden back to its former glory!
After this experience Phil became self-employed and worked as a Landscape Gardener and Tree Surgeon in the Putney area of south west London, working on large private residential estates.
After many years of commuting to Putney, Phil set up a Tree Surgery business in the local Elmbridge area, and he has been running it ever since. In 2011 Matthew (Phil’s son) came on board to help run the business.
In Phil’s spare time he has a passion for old Landovers and works on restoring them back to health to take off-road, for work and fun. In addition to this passion, Phil also enjoys listening to early music (medieval renaissance) and eventually, when he has time, would like to learn how to play some of the instruments.
After leaving school, Matt started working for Whitely Village, with all on-site training. For 5 years Matt maintained the grounds within the village and the surrounding woodland (340 acres of land), so he had his work cut out and learnt a huge amount of skills.
After 5 years with Whitely Village, Matt moved on to specialising in private garden maintenance, hard and soft landscaping, such as patio laying, decking, fencing, planting etc., before being offered to go into partnership with his father in 2012.
Since then Matt and Phil have worked together and have enjoyed seeing the business grow organically based on word of mouth recommendations and repeat customers.
In Matt's spare time he likes to be outdoors. Having recently taken over a neglected allotment, which is now just about past its poor state. If Matt is not at his allotment then you'll find him in his local pub with his niece's dog, Ratty (which Matt tends to borrow - he’s a little Chihuahua that won’t leave his side). And finally, Matt's other passion is going to gigs and festivals all over the UK.
